From the Mayor's Desk: September 25, 2026

Fall is officially upon us, and as we welcome a new season, September gives us an opportunity to reflect on the many ways our community came together — to remember, to serve, and to support one another.

That spirit was especially meaningful as we marked the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on our nation. The City of Cerritos held a remembrance at our Tribute to Public Safety Plaza, located in front of the Cerritos Sheriff’s Station. The plaza includes a memorial honoring those who lost their lives in New York City; Arlington, Virginia; and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. We all remember where we were on that fateful day 25 years ago. Through a ceremonial wreath presentation and moment of silence, our community came together to remember those we lost and honor the courage and sacrifice of the first responders who answered the call.

That same spirit of community carries into the many programs and services the City provides throughout the year. From opportunities to safely dispose of sensitive documents to places where residents can find relief during periods of extreme heat, these services are designed to meet the everyday needs of our residents and enhance the quality of life in Cerritos.

On September 19, the City hosted a free Paper Shredding and Compost Event at the Cerritos Senior Center, giving residents a safe and responsible way to dispose of personal documents and other materials. Events like these may seem simple, but they provide practical services that make a meaningful difference in our community.

During periods of extreme heat, Cerritos also continued to make public facilities available as places where residents could cool off during regular building hours. The Cerritos Library, Cerritos Senior Center, Liberty Park Community Center, and Cerritos Park East Community Center provided welcoming spaces for residents to escape the heat and stay comfortable. There is a little something for everyone while inside our City facilities. Maybe you have always wanted to learn to play an instrument, try a new class, get in a workout, pick up a good book, or simply meet up with friends. The best part is you can do it all while staying cool! 

As summer comes to an end, so do several successful youth sports seasons through the Cerritos Recreation Services Division. This weekend, players and their families will gather to recognize the volunteer coaches who supported the 2025–2026 Youth Boys and Girls Basketball and 2026 Youth Soccer leagues.

Across both leagues, 89 coaches helped guide hundreds of young athletes from Cerritos and our surrounding communities. Many of these volunteers have dedicated years and hundreds of hours to youth sports. One deserving individual will receive this year’s Mayor’s Award, presented to a coach or assistant coach who has served on 20 teams or volunteered at least 600 hours.

Their commitment goes beyond teaching a sport. Volunteer coaches help young people develop confidence, teamwork, discipline and leadership — values that extend well beyond the playing field. Their dedication is a source of pride for our City, and I am honored to recognize them.

September was filled with opportunities that reflect Strategic Plan Goal #8: Ensure Continued Excellence in Community Recreation and Community Programming. My City Council colleagues and I remain committed to working alongside City staff to strengthen the programs, facilities, and services that help make Cerritos a special place to live, work, and play.

Ultimately, a strong community is built not only through major events, but through the everyday moments when we show up for one another — remembering those who came before us, supporting our neighbors, volunteering our time, and making sure residents have access to the services and spaces they need.
