From the Mayor's Desk: June 5, 2026

By Cerritos Mayor Lynda P. Johnson

One of Cerritos’ many unique characteristics is how we honor the community and celebrate special occasions. In recent weeks, my City Council colleagues and I were delighted to join with residents and businesses for both traditional and inaugural activities.

The community gathered for our Memorial Day Wreath Laying on May 25 to honor members of the United States military who have given the ultimate sacrifice. For years, the City has invited residents and visitors to reflect and give thanks to our fallen heroes with a ceremony at the Veterans Memorial located at the Cerritos Civic Center. I’m grateful we are able to offer such a beautiful time for reflection, tribute, and community engagement.

On May 28, a first-of-its kind ceremony honored the accomplishments of our residents. Celebrating Cerritos is a new, quarterly event that gives honorees the dedicated spotlight they truly deserve. I am proud to share that 60 students, faculty advisors, and chaperones from Cerritos High School Model United Nations and Gahr High School Model United Nations were recognized at this inaugural event. The special meeting – held separately from our regular City Council meetings - was designed entirely around our community’s brightest stars.

Two days later, on May 30, 557 people of all ages participated in the City’s inaugural 5K Run/Walk at the Cerritos Sports Complex. The fun-filled event featured cow-inspired memorabilia, a Health Expo and food trucks; a continuation of the City's year-long 70th anniversary celebration. It was made possible by registration fees and sponsorships from local businesses, Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn, and the Port of Long Beach.

City events have been among the topics discussed during the current budget planning process. I’m mindful of the value they bring, and also of their costs. Should these events continue, we must be thoughtful in our event setup and staff time, and obtain sponsorships where possible. This enables us to maintain fiscal discipline without compromising meaningful experiences for our community. As a result, certain events may be different than before; yet be done in a way that maintains focus on who we are honoring and what we are celebrating.

I encourage you to attend our third and final budget study session at the June 8 City Council meeting. A public hearing and adoption of the Fiscal Year 2026-2027 Budget is scheduled for June 22. I look forward to hearing your feedback and continuing the discussion on Cerritos’ future.
