From the Mayor's Desk: January 16, 2026

By Cerritos Mayor Frank Aurelio Yokoyama

The City of Cerritos prides itself in offering quality services for all residents and staying vigilant of the shifting needs of our community. This week, the Cerritos City Council was pleased to move forward on a plan to elevate programming for residents age 50 and above.

By establishing a Senior Services Commission, we’ve created more opportunities to hear from and collaborate with residents on how we serve our City’s senior community. The commission will act in an advisory capacity to the City Council on the needs of senior services programming. This includes day excursions, special events, and senior-related resources. They will also be responsible for providing guidance on accessibility matters, serving residents with disabilities.

Applications are now open for the Senior Services Commission. Five applicants will be appointed to membership positions, with terms lasting two years. Eligibility includes being a Cerritos resident who is 50 years of age or older at the time of the appointment. Meetings of the Senior Services Commission will take place on the third Tuesday of odd-numbered months at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chamber. To be considered for appointment, an application must be submitted online at cerritos.gov/boards or in person to the Office of the City Clerk.

The City Council also approved a City Celebrations Committee, whose members will provide guidance to staff on several events throughout the year. This includes Festival of Friendship, Spring Fling, Let Freedom Ring Celebration, Halloween Festival, Water Lantern Festival, UbeFest, and Santa’s Sleigh Day at the CCPA. Members of the now dissolved Let Freedom Ring Committee will continue the remainder of their terms on the City Celebrations Committee.

These groups are examples of how the City and the Cerritos City Council are working to identify the needs of our community in alignment with Strategic Plan Goal #8: Continued Excellence in Community Recreation and Community Programming.

My City Council colleagues and I invite you to get involved in City of Cerritos advisory boards, by attending meetings, and through continued advocacy for your fellow residents.
