From the Mayor's Desk: April 24, 2026
By Cerritos Mayor Lynda P. Johnson
Seventy years ago, on April 24, 1956, a small community voted to incorporate as the City of Dairy Valley. With nearly 3,500 people at the time, cows outnumbered residents by nine to one. When we officially became Cerritos in 1967, the City was well on its way to becoming one of the fastest growing communities in California. The growth we’ve experienced since then has been truly amazing. This weekend, I’m honored to serve as your Mayor as we celebrate this extraordinary platinum anniversary together.
Cerritos has been my hometown since 1971, when the City adopted its first General Plan. This plan laid out a vision for the Cerritos of today; a park-like community with acres of green open space, beautiful neighborhoods, and a smart mix of commercial and industrial development. In 2026, more than 48,000 residents and our many visitors benefit from world-class parks and amenities, a state-of-the-art library, the renowned Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts, Los Cerritos Center, Cerritos Auto Square, and so much more.
You’re invited to join us for a series of events to commemorate our 70th anniversary. Beginning tonight, it’s the premiere of the Cerritos Resident Talent Showcase. The event features singing, dancing, and musical performances from Cerritos residents ages four and older. The event will air on Cerritos TV3 at 7 p.m. on April 24, with rebroadcasts at various times this Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. The event will also be available on the City’s YouTube channel.
Saturday morning, April 25, join us for the dedication of a new sculpture, Milking Time — A Tribute to Dairy Valley, at 10:30 a.m. at the Cerritos Civic Center. The artwork reflects Cerritos’ agricultural roots and the enduring values of family and community. The dedication will be followed by a petting zoo with farm animals, craft activities, and storytimes for children. The City will also unveil StoryCorps: Voices of Cerritos — A Celebration of 70 Years. These recorded interviews will be held by appointment in the Cerritos Library Board Room.
Our anniversary celebrations continue Saturday evening with Cerritos’ annual Spring Fling & Fireworks Spectacular. Admission to the event is free and runs from 4 to 8:30 p.m. at the Cerritos Sports Complex. A dance recital, local talent show, line dancing, and professional acts will be featured, along with gourmet food trucks offering food for sale. A fireworks display will be presented at 8:30 p.m.
These events are not only a celebration of our history and progress, but they are also the City’s way of saying thank you for your contributions to our community. The City Council and our staff look forward to continuing partnerships with residents, businesses, and visitors to strengthen Cerritos for years to come. See you this weekend!
