From the Mayor’s Desk: October 30, 2026

By Cerritos Mayor Lynda Provido Johnson

With each day, the City of Cerritos is enhancing its service to the community, from hosting events to connecting residents with key resources. October brought big changes to our residential and commercial permitting process, exciting economic development updates, and reminders of the City’s safety and educational resources.

This week the City was pleased to launch a new, full-service online permitting hub for the Departments of Community Development and Public Works. This upgrade strengthens how we support our community by streamlining permitting and approval processes for residential, commercial and industrial development projects, excavation and encroachment work, building and safety services and inspections, and landscaping approvals. The upgrade exemplifies the City’s commitment to responsive governance and modernized practices, which will have positive impacts on economic development and infrastructure across Cerritos. The City is also excited to see recent business renovations and grand openings. This month, the City joined Champion Pharmacy for its grand opening at 13434 Artesia Boulevard, and celebrated a grand re-opening for Club Pilates, which doubled its studio space at 11900 South Street, Suite 120. October also brought the launch of our Shop Cerritos video series, highlighting new businesses and activities for residents and visitors. From this month’s features on the LA Fan Shop featuring Dodgers gear at DICK’S Sporting Goods to the Fallstivities Pumpkin Patch at Los Cerritos Center, there is plenty to showcase and more to come. Watch the videos on the Shop Cerritos playlist on YouTube and follow along on the City’s other social media platforms: Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and X.

Fall is an excellent time to hit the links at the Cerritos Iron-Wood Nine Golf Course, one of the nicest nine-hole executive courses in the region. A capacity field registered for its Tees & Tacos Tournament on October 23, which featured food truck service and offered prizes to the top finishers. The beautifully maintained Iron-Wood Nine course features a lighted driving range with 27 bays. Golfers can also rent hand carts and clubs. Whether you are trying to shave strokes off your score or play a round with family and friends, make your reservation today at cerritos.gov/ironwoodnine.

When it comes to supporting our seniors, we are grateful for the hard-working staff at the Cerritos Senior Center at Pat Nixon Park and our community partners. On October 2, the Senior Center welcomed approximately 400 people to its Senior Health and Wellness Fair, connecting seniors with resources that promote a healthy, active, and well-rounded approach to aging. City staff along with representatives from nearly 50 vendors providing senior-related services were available to meet with participants. The City extends its thanks to sponsor the Port of Long Beach for its support of the Health and Wellness Fair. I am incredibly proud to see such a well-attended and interactive event, which shows us why Cerritos has and will continue to do our part to serve our community’s seniors.

You cannot beat fall weather in Cerritos. Yet amid possible El Niño storm conditions, the City wants to ensure residents are prepared. State resources have been mobilized in accordance with the state’s emergency declaration last month. In Cerritos, community members are reminded that sandbags can be obtained for free at their local fire station. Free sand is available to fill the sandbags in the parking lot of Cerritos Corporate Yard, located at 16540 Marquart Avenue. No appointment is necessary. Residents arriving with sandbags are encouraged to bring their own shovel. The City also encourages community members to connect with available resources and have a plan ready. At cerritos.gov/prepare, residents can access emergency preparedness tools, sign up for emergency notifications from Los Angeles County, and navigate to resources at the state and federal levels.

A prepared and engaged community is key to the great quality of life we enjoy in Cerritos. From event participation and patronizing businesses to storm preparation, your involvement makes a difference. The City looks forward to more opportunities to connect with and support you as we enter the holiday season.
