City Holds Graduation Ceremony for Inaugural L.E.A.D. Academy

The City of Cerritos celebrated its inaugural graduating class of its civic leadership academy, L.E.A.D. Cerritos, during a ceremony on July 23.
The ceremony followed completion of the seventh and final session for this year’s academy, which has met monthly since January to learn about the inner workings of the City’s departments and services. L.E.A.D stands for Learn, Educate, Act, and Discover. The academy was designed to educate and empower Cerritos residents by deepening their understanding of local government operations, decision-making processes, and community commitments. A total of 56 residents participated in the academy and were recognized at the graduation ceremony.
“On behalf of the Cerritos City Council and the City of Cerritos, we extend our appreciation and congratulations to the inaugural L.E.A.D. Cerritos graduating class,” said Mayor Lynda Provido Johnson. “It was rewarding to see both new and long-time Cerritos residents learn something new about their City and to work alongside staff to better understand City operations and the value of public service. This has been civic engagement at its finest, resulting in stronger connection among our participants with our employees.”
This year’s participants were introduced to key aspects of City services over the seven-session program. These focused on overall government structure, community safety, budget and finance, community and economic development, infrastructure and public works, community and cultural services, and theater and communications.
Applications for the 2027 L.E.A.D. Cerritos civic leadership academy will be announced later this year. To be eligible for the program, participants must reside in Cerritos and be at least 18 years old. Priority registration is given to currently appointed Cerritos Advisory Board members.
