City Council Approves Plans for Dick’s House of Sport and Carmenita Plaza North
Details
The Cerritos City Council has approved plans to bring a Dick’s House of Sport to Los Cerritos Center and a significant remodel to a portion of the Carmenita Plaza North shopping center, marking major investments in the City’s economic future. The actions by the City Council came during its regular meeting on July 27.
Dick’s House of Sport will be located on the 4.65-acre site formerly occupied by Sears at Los Cerritos Center, clearing the way for the construction of a new, 141,630-square-foot, two-story retail and sports experience store. Dick’s House of Sport combines traditional retail with hands-on athletic experiences. The proposed site will include indoor climbing walls, golf simulator bays, equipment demonstration areas, and an outdoor athletic field featuring a synthetic turf and perimeter running track surface.
“I am proud to join my City Council colleagues in supporting projects that reinvest in our community and align with our Strategic Plan Goal of strengthening our economy,” said Mayor Lynda Provido Johnson. “I want to thank our partners at Dick’s Sporting Goods and the work of City staff and our advisory boards for setting the stage for this momentous project that will re-invigorate the northern anchor end of Los Cerritos Center. Bringing a flagship destination like Dick’s House of Sport to Cerritos, along with site improvements at Carmenita Plaza North, will bring in new businesses, draw visitors from across the region, create local jobs, and generate additional sales tax revenue.”
Macerich, which manages and co-owns Los Cerritos Center, will oversee development of the Dick’s House of Sport site in coordination with the City’s Community Development Department. The company says it hopes to begin construction of the facility later this year, with an anticipated opening date in spring 2028.
The Carmenita Plaza North project consists of upgrading the facade of its three northern buildings, including a vacant large anchor tenant space, various in-line commercial/retail shops, and an existing bank building. The project also calls for refurbishing and upgrading part of the shopping center's existing landscaping and paved areas.
