Community Invited to Series of Meetings on Cerritos’ Budget
Details
The City of Cerritos invites the community to participate in a series of meetings ahead of the Fiscal Year 2026-2027 Budget adoption.
Meetings will focus on the City’s current fiscal climate, financial forecasts, and budget considerations. Participants will also have opportunities to share their feedback. The first meeting will take place on Wednesday, April 15, at 7 p.m. at the Cerritos Senior Center at Pat Nixon Park. The second meeting is a virtual webinar scheduled for Tuesday, April 21. Three more meetings will take place in May and June.
The meetings come as City staff, at the direction of the City Council on March 9, are developing a dual budget framework for the next fiscal year. Under this approach, the City Council would consider adopting one of two budget options. One option would assume approval and implementation of a voter-approved 1% Transactions and Use (TUT) tax. The other budget scenario would assume no such TUT revenue is approved, and include different considerations such as reduced City services in order to balance the budget.
Staff had previously briefed the City Council on alternative revenue options that would support additional revenues and future water and sewer rate relief. Among the alternative revenues evaluated at the meeting, a 1% TUT would generate substantially greater ongoing revenue than the others. Projections also show that non-residents would account for the majority of revenue that the City receives from a TUT.
The City Council also authorized the City Manager to establish a Resident Budget Task Force to provide community input on the City's current budget situation and potential budget balancing strategies. Task Force meetings are currently ongoing, with updates to be provided at upcoming community budget meetings.
